Help me give my students items to place in our seasonal sensory table, such as water beads, small gardening tools, seasonal animal figurines and plants, and holiday-themed cookie cutters.
Within the first week of kindergarten, I could tell that my kinders were kind beyond their years. It amazes me how much kindness can be held in such tiny bodies. They give hugs, high fives, compliments, and encouragement to me and their classmates. They make it a point to "fill each others' buckets". They may talk in the hallways sometimes, they may be too loud at lunch, they may not always finish their work, but they're kind. What more could I ask for?
There are so many tiny different personalities in my kindergarten classroom, yet, all of those personalities come together and create magic.
Some of them know almost all of their letters and sounds, some of them don't. Some of them can count to 100. Some of them can't. Some of them can use scissors. Some of them can't hold a pencil. Some of them have awesome social skills, while some are too shy to say "Good Morning". Yet, when I stand back and watch them interact with each other and work, the growth and possibilities they possess leaves me speechless. They are truly magical tiny humans and they deserve even more than I could ever give them.
My Project
My class has a wonderful, wooden, handmade sensory table that I was SO excited to find when I moved into my new classroom this year! The kiddos LOVE it and are exploring in it every.single.day! As a first year teacher, I have so many ideas on how I want to make the sensory table correlate with the seasons/themes/holidays that our class experiences. I find it so important to bring real-life into the items we explore and learn with every day.
I have chosen to create a project to purchase seasonal items to fill our sensory bin with as the year progresses, so that the students have new items to explore with, as well as learn more about the seasons and holidays that we are experiencing throughout the year.
These items include seasonal animal figurines and plants such as: artificial apples and ABC blocks for the beginning of the school year, artificial acorns, pumpkins, and forrest animas for fall, artificial evergreen branches and pinecones for winter, heart shaped buttons for February, gold coins for March, plastic Easter grass and eggs, as well as gardening tools and artificial flowers for the remainder of the spring season, and water beads and artificial ocean animals and seashells for the end of the school year.
Seasons is a part of the kindergarten curriculum in my state, and I am finding that the best way to enhance my kindergarteners learning experiences is by surrounding them with the curriculum throughout our classroom, and using a cross-curriculum approach. Including seasonal items in our sensory bin will enhance my kindergarteners awareness of our world and of our curriculum as they explore in the sensory bin during center time.
