Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My kindergarteners are curious, energetic and caring students who learn in both Spanish and English at our dual language school. As a special education teacher, I work across all kindergarten classrooms, supporting students who need additional help to succeed.

The resources I'm requesting will ensure that my special education students have the visual supports they need to both access our kindergarten curriculum and make progress on their individual goals.

All of my special education students require extra visuals that support them throughout the day. During class read alouds, they have a "topic board" (with key words from the story accompanied by basic pictures) that they can use to help comprehend the story. Students who have trouble speaking also use topic boards to point at images in order to communicate their ideas. Students who need extra behavior support use visuals to remind them of behavior expectations across different settings. Math visuals remind students what vocabulary words mean and help them understand math problems. Those are just a few examples of the many extra visuals I create to support students and they are in addition to the visual curriculum components, which are provided on PDFs that also must be printed.

The challenge? We have ONE color printer shared by 60+ teachers and dozens of school support staff. Although my students NEED clear visuals (per their IEPs), I'm not always able to provide them with this support. The color printer is in high demand and when it isn't working, we don't have a backup.

Although I still plan to use the school provided printer as much as possible, I have realized that I need to have a backup plan and that is why I'm requesting a color printer. Having my own printer will ensure that my students ALWAYS have what they need.
