Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students, from Chicago, are in a self-contained special education Kindergarten classroom. The students are from various neighborhoods of the south side and they have a wide range of abilities.
My energetic students are ready to learn, explore, and discover all the new ideas and skills that a typical Kindergarten student would learn, but from home.
They get so excited when they learn to identify letters, numbers, and colors! They love to meet their new teachers and classmates, and explore their new classroom. They enjoy listening to the teacher read aloud, playing with puzzles, coloring, printing, and doing hands on activities.
So much learning happens in Kindergarten. My students are very inquisitive, creative, and motivated. They love to learn new words and expand their vocabularies. Since we will be starting the school year doing remote learning, learning at home, my students won' t have access to any of our educational materials or toys.
My Project
Learning to recognize quantities quickly (subitizing) is an essential skill for young children as a precursor to adding and subtracting. The dice will help students by allowing them to practice recognizing "how many". Dabbers will help students develop fine motor skills and allow them to make letters of the alphabet, using bright colors. Shape stencils will allow students to make/draw shapes and help students to identify circles, squares, triangles, rectangles etc. Ice cube trays will allow students to put "counters" into each mold to count from 1-12. Dry erase markers will help students to practice printing on white boards at home, without wasting paper. Shaving cream is something we frequently use in the classroom as a sensory activity, where students can practice making letters or numbers in the shaving cream. Slime is another sensory activity that students use while taking a "brain break" or "chilling out". Please help my kindergartners have a successful start to their school year while working at home, along with their teachers during remote learning. These are just a few items that will help students to do what we would be doing in the classroom, using a hands on approach to learning.
