Help me give my students the art and building supplies they need to use their imaginations and problem solving skills to become artists and engineers. Simple materials such as paint, cardboard and markers can lead to amazing creativity.
My students are bright and eager learners, many of whom are experiencing school for the first time. I am a kindergarten teacher and I currently have 20 students. We are a school-wide Title I school in an urban neighborhood and our community is challenged economically.
Many of our students and their families are refugees and asylees from war-torn parts of the world.
We also have many native Mainers whose families are facing generational poverty. My students are culturally diverse, and bring the gift of that diversity with them into the classroom. My students love reading, writing, singing and hands-on learning experiences. Our school is an Expeditionary Learning school.
My Project
Kindergarten students start the year as bright and eager learners, ready to share their ideas through hands-on activities and learning. We begin our year in Kindergarten working as engineers; building and creating using our imaginations and everyday materials to create the most amazing and often intricate creations.
Kindergarten students learn best when tasks are open-ended and create the opportunity for them to take charge, get messy, solve problems, and work together to find a solution.
Our "Engineer Lab" is the perfect opportunity for all of this! My builders need simple materials such as yarn, cardboard, paint and markers as tools for their creations. It is truly inspiring to watch a young engineer's ideas come to life! Students have the chance to work together and share ideas as they problem solve how to create their own designs. Each time something doesn't work quite the way they wanted, they have the opportunity to to try again, redesign, and bring themselves one step closer to success. The process leads to confident, creative problem solvers ready to take on challenges across all parts of the school day!
