Kindergarden in the Rain with Puddles and Mud! Part 2
Help me give my students two wooden, rolling, lockable cabinets to store our outdoor gardening supplies (raincoats, rain boots, shovels, trowels, binoculars, and buckets).
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
This is part 2 of a gardening project. The first part requested rain boots, raincoats, gloves and gardening tools. Part 2 is requesting two mobile storage units that can store the previously requested materials inside near our courtyard garden.
My school is one of an ever expanding number of green schools in my district.
A few years ago we worked with a nonprofit called Reflow that works with the Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewage District to help eliminate asphalt on school playgrounds and create green spaces for the children. We have two large bioswales in the front of our school. Bioswales are landscape features that collect polluted stormwater runoff, soak it into the ground, and filter out pollution. Bioswales are similar to rain gardens but are designed to capture much more runoff coming from larger areas of impervious surfaces like the asphalt on playgrounds. Our courtyard was previously covered in asphalt, and we now have native perennials growing with winding paths, benches, and areas where the children can dig. This space also has tree trunks and logs where the children can, run, walk, balance, and jump, building their gross motor skills.
The courtyard is my favorite place on our playground. In fall the grasses are taller than the children. They play hide-n-seek, and they build shelters with dried up stalks and grasses. They also dig, and dig, and dig.
The cabinets requested in this project will give us a space where we can keep all of our equipment clean, organized, and in a safe place.
