This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My school is one of an ever expanding number of green schools in my district. A few years ago we worked with a nonprofit called Reflow that works with the Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewage District to help eliminate asphalt on school playgrounds and create green spaces for the children. We have two large bioswales in the front of our school. Bioswales are landscape features that collect polluted stormwater runoff, soak it into the ground, and filter out pollution. Bioswales are similar to rain gardens but are designed to capture much more runoff coming from larger areas of impervious surfaces like the asphalt on playgrounds. Another courtyard space was previously covered in asphalt and we now have native perennials growing.
In the fall, the courtyard provides an almost jungle like area for the children to explore through the tall native grasses and plants.
They dig and create using recyclables, and run and chase each other through the paths and grasses. It is a magical place! What we don't have are boots and raincoats for when the weather is wet, muddy, or raining. I would like the children to experience the garden fully regardless of the weather. All weather can be good weather if one is dressed appropriately.
I would also like to give the children shovels and wheelbarrows to truly deepen their gardening experience. In the fall, the children use the stalks from dried up plants and the dried grasses to make hide-n-go seek shelters. We also can plant bulbs and then see the flower cycle come to completion in the springtime.
