Kinder Skygarden: A 2nd-Story Birdhouse and Feeder Sanctuary

My students need a birdhouse, three bird feeders, bird seed, suet, nectar, and a set of chimes to watch and care for wild birds.

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our public Montessori pre-K and Kindergarten class is a feast for the senses. In every area of our Children's House, my students are small scientists, exploring, recording, and experiencing. Science and math don't come from worksheets and cut and paste; we study science in everything around us.

Our school is a Title I-- high poverty-- designated school in an older part of the city.

Yet, you would never know it visiting the school. The parents are engaged, supportive, and energized by the quality of education their children are receiving. We collaborate closely, daily even, with families to create a dynamic, diverse place that would rival any private school for attention to students' success. We are working to prove the amazing things that can be accomplished in public school.

My Project

With bird feeders, seeds, and a bird house, our second-story classroom will carry our garden up to the sky. We will build a sense of care for the community and responsibility in filling the feeders each day, and we can experience manifold connections to math, counting visitors and recording how much they eat. With art and avian anatomy lessons, we can draw and paint the native and traveling birds that come to the window. We will gain a connection to the seasons and local zoology, and we can write so many stories and journal entries. We will observe the animal life cycle with the glass-backed birdhouse. Beyond that, it will be thing of beauty to excite the children about coming to school each day, which is why I added the chimes. This is our garden in the air.

Students will never forget our own bird-watching sky garden at each window.

They will not be able to wait to get back to school to watch cardinals, finches, hummingbirds, and blue jays. A few hundred dollars will yield a life-long love for observing and supporting wildlife, integrated into every area of our curriculum. We may not have a garden at our door, but there will be a garden of singing birds at every window.
