Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
On the first day of Kindergarten most of my students are already "behind" in their skills but you'd never know it from their LOVE and enthusiasm for school! They are bubbly, full of life and ready to learn. This means I need to fill in the missing gaps of skills quickly so we can dive into learning!
My Super Stars are an amazing bunch of little learners and their resiliency continues to astound me day after day.
Our school is located in the heart of the inner city in one of the "worst" neighborhoods. Imagine growing up surrounded by gangs, violence, extreme poverty and homelessness. The fact that my little loves continue to show up to school every day ready to learn and love is a humbling experience. Many of them did not have the ability to attend PreK so they need to play catch up from day one. Every learning experience we do needs to have both our Kindergarten expectations but also missing foundation skills that they are still lacking. The great thing about my kids is that they are ready for anything!! In our classroom we don't say "I can't!" instead we say "I can't yet, but I will!"
My Project
There is nothing quite so powerful as incorporating music into a classroom to bring a lesson alive to children. It activates minds and hearts! This is especially true for my inner-city students that love to learn through music. We will use these shape drums to work on missing foundation skills such as colors and shapes but we'll also use them in so many other ways including counting the number of taps, learning to listen to small differences in pitch to help us attend to what we're hearing and more! Most people wouldn't think you could use drums to help teach pre-reading skills but you can! We will use these drums to help us "tap out" the sounds in words through segmenting. We will be able to count the number of sounds we hear, tap out the individual sounds and then we'll swirl our drum sticks over our heads like magic wands to put the words back together. You can help make this magical dream of learning to read come true!
Instead of the traditional approach of sitting and listening to the teacher, using these drums will transform our lessons into hands-on, minds-on, hearts-full learning experiences.
Not only will we fill in the missing gaps in basic skills, but we will advance our learning through experiences that will make learning to read feel like MAGIC!
