My Students

My students are from low socioeconomic backgrounds. Most are second language learners, who need visuals and extra support learning the language. The area around the school is mostly apartments. My students need extra supplies in order to jump start their learning and get them ready to start reading and writing. Students are so enthusiastic about learning and wanting to grasp the language, sounds and words. With these supplies, students will have the opportunity to get to where they need to be in kindergarten.

My Project

So much of transitional kindergarten is based on being able to express one's feelings and developing social and emotional skills and strategies. I have been fortunate to grow my language arts, math, and choice time centers and now I need to focus on social and emotional skills. With Kimochis, there is a specific curriculum and lessons to go along with each emotion. There are times when students get frustrated and do not know how to express these feelings. Kimochis are a "playful way to help children learn how to identify and express feelings". So many of my students speak a different language at home and don't have the vocabulary or skills needed to communicate how they are feeling.
