This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I learned so much this year about how to foster a students love for reading. I observed my students all year and what they checked out of the library in comparison to what I had in my classroom library. I had never met a group of kids that read all the time. They read as they walked down the halls. They read while they waited for class to start. They even read when they weren't supposed to be reading. It all boiled down to the fact that they immersed themselves in books and ideas that intrigued them, and I want to expose my students next year to an improved classroom library. I want to expose them to relevant, page turning stories with adventure and life lessons. My students this year taught me that kids are willing to read in abundance if they are exposed to relevant,engaging on level books.

My Project

My students need a classroom library that sparks a love for reading with books like Legends of Zita the Spacegirl, The Black Cauldron, A Wrinkle in Time and other books. I remember when I first taught 5th grade and I couldn't get my students to foster a love for reading. This year I observed what my students chose to read. I noticed what genres intrigued them. I also realized I had an awful class library. Thankfully, our school library and the city library offered books that really sparked their interest. I want to be able to offer my current and future students a class full of books that I can introduce and get them excited about reading and all that reading has to offer. Books such as "Diary of a wimpy kid," " I survived," and "You are a girl who can do anything," open my ESL students to more vocabulary, ideas, and sentence structure. I want to light a fire in some and keep the fire burning in others. Kids just need exposure to good books and on level books to boost their confidence in reading. I have selected a great set of book in order to do that.
