Kids Still On The Move

My students need plenty of different flexible seating options in order to do their best. In order to have a thriving classroom, new research shows that a student centered and engaging classroom is key.

My Students

My students walk into our classroom every day full of life, ready to learn, and excited for what is in store for them that day. Every day before the bell rings I ask them, "Who's the greatest?" - in which they reply, "I am!!" I want them to know I believe in them and they can do anything.

My students are.....the Future!

They are normal second grade girls and boys, who need to be engaged and allowed to move around during school. They enjoy choices, hands on learning, and being comfortable.

They are dreamers, thinkers, talkers, and questioners. They are mini inspirations to themselves and others around them, even if they don't know it yet. They are budding ambassadors, world travelers, scientists, entrepreneurs, teachers... They are our future and I want to give them a great start to their long successful career. They want to be in school because they want to learn all they can so they can be successful one day.

My Project

Who wants to sit in a desk all day? So many students are being too quickly and too often overly diagnosed with ADHD - because they need to move! I teach 21-25 second graders (7-8 year olds) in a Title 1 school. Studies have shown the benefits of having a flexible seating classroom - students are more engaged because they are able to choose where they will work best, and it allows their little bodies to move around while still being engaged, on task, and learning. Not only are they focused on instruction, but they are also improving the health and wellness of their body.

I would like to be able to offer a variety of seating options such as soft seats and wobble chairs to help meet the needs of all of my students.

I am very excited to start this new flexible seating plan in my classroom for this next school year. Although many teachers are scared to try this new movement, I feel like I would be doing a disservice to my students if I did not implement this new classroom strategy.
