This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Project
I am a 6th grade science teacher in a 1st-8th grade school building. I initially began our Kids Grow Green Program with my 4th grade classroom 3 years ago. I moved to our middle school program 2 years ago and now teach 6th grade science. I expanded our Kids Grow Green Program to my 6th graders and this year to my first grade buddy classroom. My 6th graders and students in my first grade buddy classroom have been learning how to grow fresh healthy greens in an exciting, innovative and sustainable way. Students took such great care of their seedlings and then watched their seedlings grow into lettuce right in front of them! This hands on experience was super exciting for students. One 1st grade gardener even shared it was his favorite part of school. Our 1st grade and 6th grade "gardeners" learned how to prepare and grow their seedlings, transfer their seedlings to a classroom hydroponics system and finish their first harvest of fresh lettuce in a collaborative, innovative and exciting way! Our middle school students prepared the fresh healthy lettuce in bags and the bags of lettuce were delivered to a local shelter.
Students are learning how to solve real world problems in an innovative, exciting and sustainable way and providing fresh greens to the community.
This project fully funded will help support our Kids Grow Green program and will help us with our next harvest in 6th grade and with my 1st grade buddy classroom. I have continued to sustain this program each year by personally funding all of the materials needed. The cost of maintaining the program is increasing as I work to involve more students and increase the impact of fresh greens students are able to provide to the community. Your generosity would be a blessing.
