Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am a third grade GATE teacher in Southern California. I teach in a Title I school that is making significant gains in our AYP and API scores. Our staff is committed in becoming a distinguished school in the near future, and through literacy, we believe we can achieve this. My gifted students come mostly from low income families.

Currently, my school has been devastated with cuts in our budget that make it challenging to purchase extra book sets for individual classrooms. However, my students have developed a love for chapter books that are used for literature circles, reciprocal teaching, and silent reading. Chapter books lend themselves for richer discussions and character development activities.

My students need 22 copies of "Flying Solo." This book relates to ethical and real life experiences that my students can connect and relate to. These books will also be used for character development, understanding the author's purpose, and vocabulary development. This story also contains examples of friendly letters and dialogue.

Your assistance will empower my students with more reading skills through the use of reading strategies and reading comprehension skills. "Flying Solo" is an opportunity for them to laugh, question, and empathize with characters in the story. This is a perfect story that also ties in character traits that I discuss with my students on a daily basis. This book set will allow us to continue our love for narratives!
