I have the most amazing classroom. I teach kids in 6th-12th grade who have emotional and behavioral disorders (anxiety, depression, PTSD), ADHD, and are on the Autism Spectrum. I teach them that life isn't always fair and that it is still our job to "show up and try." These kids have a wide range of strengths and struggles but are often unable to focus on schoolwork because of the distractions within their bodies that are outside of their control. When we can provide them with the specific supports that they need, we are giving them the access to their education that every student deserves. They are then more successful in my classroom as well as in the general education classroom. My students need the tools that will help them to better focus, regulate their over and/or under stimulated senses as well as calm their busy bodies so that they can manage their behavior and be successful, independent learners and citizens.
My Project
No child chooses to be a distraction to their learning environment. Our class focuses on eliminating the internal and external obstacles that hinder a child's learning. Chair bands, noise-eliminating headphones, and visual timers are a few things that will manage the stimuli that can impede these kids' access to their education. As they learn to use these tools, they will better be able to focus on what is being taught in their special education as well as general education classes. They will be able to better participate in team and independent work.
The confidence that comes with success, is invaluable.
Just like a pair of glasses, once these kids find the tools that best support them, they will be able to better do the work that is asked of them. We need to meet them where they are.
