I work at a New York City public school serving Bellerose, Queens. We have students of every nationality. My school is very diverse. Many are immigrants or have parents who have immigrated to the United States. The legal cap for a class is 32 students and most of our classrooms hit that cap, making it difficult to provide essential materials in our 21st-century classrooms to all 32 at once. My students are all wonderful, unique, special children. We would love any help you can offer- big or small!
My Project
Our students are CONSTANTLY working in collaborative groups on the floor due to limited amount of space at desks for all groups. Sometimes we as teachers have to join them on the floor as well. From first-hand experience, it is quite uncomfortable. They have nowhere to put their notebooks and tablets (which we got last year through DonorsChoose!!) except in their laps and their tushies are on the hardwood floor. We have some seat cushions, but they are relatively flat and still quite uncomfortable. They only provide a tiny amount of relief.
I know our students would use these materials every single day.
The last thing our students need is to be in pain while trying to learn and collaborate. Our goal is try to create as few obstacles as physically possible. Unfortunately, floor work is very much a reality in most classrooms. We cannot fit a table for each group to work at given the amount of space we have, but we can do what is within our reach to make the floor a more appealing place to work.
