Our planet is in trouble!! We hear everyday about litter, pollution, and the ozone. I would like to influence my impressionable students to be caretakers of the Earth. My students live in a rural town outside of Wilmington, North Carolina and our citizens have been fighting a proposed landfill in our area. Seventy seven percent of our students receive free or reduced lunch from the government. The landfill would produce a few temporary jobs but the environmental impact will be seen into many lifetimes. I would like to educate my students about the necessity of recycling and the impact trash has on our world. This year our school started a recycling program. It has been somewhat successful and it's potential for growth is phenomenal. We have several large containers in the back of the school to collect recyclable materials that are emptied by a recycling company on a regular basis. The difficulty in recycling is that individual classrooms don't have containers. We have tried using cardboard boxes but they break down often and aren't easily recognizable as recycling containers as students go class to class. I would like 15 containers to place around the school. Nine containers would go into teachers classrooms (6th, 7th and 8th grade teachers across the school will also be responsible for educating their students and implementing the program), 6 containers would be located in various other locations in the school (next to the copiers, in the front office, the principals office). Students would recieve and participate in lessons on why recycling paper and aluminum are important. They would also be responsible for educating students in other classes and around the school. In addition to in-school education, students would present their program to parents at a PTSO meeting so parents would be aware of the importance and availablity of recycling in our school and around the community. Although I teach 8th grade english, this program would incorportate math, science, social studies and the character education of responsibility and caring. This program would reach all the students of our school.
