My Students

"We know it is possible to enable young people to fall in love with science and technology by presenting science as a creative, hands-on, and passionate endeavor" - this quote from Margaret Honey and David Kanter explains what students already know: learning is more engaging with hands-on projects.

We are a Title I magnet middle school with a focus on science, technology, engineering and math.

We are located in the inner city; many of our students come from low-income housing. 70% of our students are on free or reduced lunch. Our diverse population of students come from all over the county. We have about 65% boys and 35% girls, and we have started a STEMGirls initiative to bridge that gap and attract more girls to STEM. We want to provide an inquisitive, technology rich environment in our library, inviting all students to explore science, technology, engineering and math in a fun way. Giving them a space and the tools to tinker with will help their curiosity to thrive. With our STEMGirls, we are looking to specifically add activities and experiences that our girls are asking for to our library makerspace. Our students are innovators and problem solvers, and providing more tools will help them to thrive and grow into the scientists and engineers of the future.

My Project

We have a vibrant library Makerspace at our school where students can explore science, technology, engineering and math while having fun. Our students love coding - we've held lunch time coding clubs, Hour of Code events and more. One beloved part of our Makerspace is our Robot Petting Zoo, which contains Spheros & Cubelets, funded through earlier projects. We want to expand our petting zoo & get even more students interested in coding by bringing Dash & Dot to our library. Dash & Dot are two seriously adorable robots and learning tools that teach creativity, problem solving, and coding. Dash & Dot are coded used block-based coding on the iPad. Students get the immediate gratification of seeing their code come to life as the robots act out the code they create. Playing with Dash & Dot will help our students to understand programming concepts in a fun, hands-on way. Our STEMGirls club has specifically asked for Dash & Dot as a way to attract more girls to STEM at our school.

By providing our students with the tools they need, they will be able to continue to be the creative innovators that they are, as they discover and explore through hands-on experiences.

Exposing our students to this atmosphere of discovery will help to prepare them to be the scientists, engineers and problem-solvers of the future. Math, science, technology and engineering concepts that were once difficult will now be opportunities for exciting explorations. Let's make learning fun again.
