My Students

I am a K-6 Computer Science prep teacher in Utah. I have been in this position for 4 years and love watching the students as they explore how to use different technology as well as learn coding. I begin teaching basic coding skills in kindergarten and then build on those skills in first grade. By the time my students hit the older grades, they have developed the skills to be able to create projects in Scratch, as well as use robots to express themselves.

Unlike with older students, there are not many robots that allow younger students to explore coding skills and build algorithms without using apps; thus, increasing screen time.

These KIBO robots will be used for the younger students to help them to develop and practice their skills.

My Project

Many of my students have been learning coding on their iPads through various apps used in our computer class. Unfortunately, many of these apps do not allow for free expression of who the students are. Also, most of their schoolwork is being done on their iPads. I want to provide my students with an opportunity to learn and practice their new coding skills with KIBO robots that are developmentally appropriate for their age group.

The KIBO robots are designed for early childhood.

Unlike the apps on their iPads, these robots can be programmed in many different ways. KIBO also allows for students to do this offscreen and while working in small groups.

With KIBO, the students are not only building the robot and the code, but also can decorate the robot to express who they are. The only limits with these robots are the students' imagination.
