My Students

Middle school students are one-of-a-kind, especially my sixth graders. My students are not enrolled in band or choir, so my class is their only opportunity to receive any music education in middle school. I was given the opportunity to teach them whatever I wanted, and I chose to teach them piano. At first the thought of teaching 30 students at one time, when I was used to giving private, one-on-one piano lessons, scared me to death. I thought there was no way the kids were going to learn. Boy, was I wrong! Over the years, I have had some students that didn't make any progress, but I have had so many that excelled at piano. A few have gone on to purchase keyboards and take piano lessons. My goal is to show my students that they all have the ability to play piano.

My Project

Through my class, my sixth graders learn to play piano. They learn to appreciate music and gain an excitement for it that they didn't previously have. However, the keyboards I am currently using are 26 years old. They are approaching the end of their life. Some are physically broken, some have keys that no longer work, some turn off and on on their own, and one will occasionally shock you when you turn it on. Having new keyboards will allow my class to continue to exist as I receive no funding from my school system. Any materials or equipment needed come from donors like you. This project will supply 5 more keyboards to my students.
