My students need a MIDI keyboard, five CASIO portable keyboards, 20 pairs of headphones, 10 headphone splitters, and 8GB RAM upgrades for our each of our three iMacs.
My students are curious, clever, and full of energy. As a K-8 Music teacher, I have the privilege to work with students as they grow from Kinder to at least 5th grade, with many of them electing to take band in 6th-8th and invest their time into the study of one instrument. Our music program is fairly new and we are situated in a low-income area, leaving us with some shortfalls in our instrument inventory. But my students make the most of what we have, singing, dancing, and playing music with enthusiasm.
My students deserve high-quality equipment and instruments.
We have had an amazing show of support and generosity for our music program in the last year and I am hoping to draw on that support once again with this project. I am so excited to enrich their educational experience with new musical equipment.
My Project
Last year our PTA generously granted us enough money to buy 12 lightweight, portable, powerful CASIO keyboards. When we work with keyboards, kids share with a partner and each have a pair of headphones so that they can focus on their own work and playing. Last year we re-purposed the headphones that we get for standardized testing after the testing period was over, but they are flimsy and not built to last. I already have a few of these high-quality, durable, great-sounding Gorsun headphones and would like to get a full classroom set. These headphones will get every student involved in the joy of music making without worrying about faulty equipment.
My music students love playing keyboard instruments, and this project will equip our class with the resources to get all of them playing at once.
Our class sizes have gone up this year, so we also need six more of the same keyboards so that all kids can have at least half a keyboard to themselves to work with. We also need new headphone splitters to go with the new keyboards so that two kids' headphones can be plugged in to each keyboard.
Lastly, we have re purposed three of our now-dismantled computer lab's old iMacs and turned them into a mini music technology lab. I have donated a couple of MIDI keyboards to the lab but we need a third to make all of our workstations fully functional. With the lab students will have the chance to compose, arrange, and record music in groups and individually, and provide opportunities to engage with music in exciting new ways.
