This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My classroom serves as a home to some of Chicago's most at-risk youth populations.

My students use music as a tool to create and to cope.

Each student that enters my classroom has a unique story to tell - a story that often begins in struggle but ends in resiliency and hope. The stories they tell are worth more than just words--giving music is giving power to their voices.

Student Demographics:

Low Income: 93.5%

Students with IEPs: 33%

Homeless (w/o permanent or adequate homes): 26.2%

English Language Learners: 14.5%

My Project

Our classroom is currently in need of five keyboards for performance, music technology, and composition projects.

Whether the goal is to learn about composition, performance, technology, or history, 'doing' is the foundation that connects students to the music.

Background:

Music is a experiential discipline that requires hands-on activities to develop a deeper connection between students and the music. The keyboard is a universal tool that can be utilized in not only traditional performance settings but also composition and technology.

Within the classroom, students learn the piano in both individual and ensemble setting in addition to using the piano to help compose music for such things as student films, movie trailers, video games, commercials, and more.
