Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I take a multi-modal, student-centered, and interdisciplinary approach to music education. Every lesson has students working on a targeted music skill that is approached through singing, dancing, and playing instruments, in small group and whole group settings.
Our school is a Title I school, which serves a predominantly immigrant community.
Close to 30% of our students are English Language Learners, and need a multimodal approach to learning. Music taps into their rich cultural assets, providing a bridge between their many ways of knowing, and the rigors of school curriculum. I currently teach 20 classes of approximately 600 students, in grades 1, 2, 3, and 4.
My Project
These 10 instruments will allow students to learn the basics of playing the keyboard, including reading treble and bass clef, and using their left and right hands. In addition, the ten keyboards will enable our class to have a keyboard section, which will accompany the recorder and non-pitched percussion section. Finally, the keyboards will also be used during independent work time, to create student compositions. These compositions will go through a writing cycle process, as students engage in drafting, rehearsing, and performing their final composition.
These mini keyboards will allow for a hands on approach to learning music, as they learn to play a variety of instruments.
It will also promote group work, through the addition of a keyboard section, which demands that students work together to play in unison. It will strengthen student ear training skills. Finally, the keyboards will facilitate music composition, as students will be able to compose in an independent or partnership setting.
