My Project

Help my students build one of the most important academic and workplace skills of the modern age: touch typing.

Many people assume that because today’s students have grown up with technology, they are naturally “tech-savvy.” But the reality is very different.

Students may be fast with their thumbs on a phone, but many struggle to use a physical QWERTY keyboard efficiently. When students are left to “pick up” typing on their own, they often develop bad habits, such as hunting and pecking, staring at the keys, and using only a few fingers.

These instructional keyboard covers are designed to help students learn touch typing the right way. By covering their hands and the keyboard, students are gently forced to keep their eyes on the screen and build muscle memory by relying on correct finger placement. Without this support, many students naturally look down at the keys, which prevents them from building true keyboard fluency.

This matters because typing is not just a convenience skill. Students need keyboarding for online assignments, state testing, writing essays, researching, communicating, coding, and eventually participating in the modern workplace. When students can type fluently, they can focus more on their ideas and less on finding each letter.

This project is especially important in a Title I school. Students who have regular access to computers at home and adults who can support them often develop typing confidence more quickly. Students who rely mostly on school-issued devices may not get the same opportunity unless keyboarding is taught explicitly at school. Providing these keyboard covers helps level the playing field so every student has a fair chance to build strong digital skills.
