My Students

My 5th graders are a fun bunch to spend my day with! I co-teach science, but mostly focus on teaching them US History in a fun and exciting way. I’ve recently adopted a couple of classroom pets: a robo dwarf hamster and a bearded dragon with special needs. My hope for these students is to learn empathy for others by helping to care for pets that are unlike others in their species.

My Project

Kermit the Beardie is a rescued special needs Bearded Dragon. He has a very difficult time walking with his back legs, he is missing a few fingers and toes, and he does not have a tail. Because of his impairments, he needs a larger terrarium than the 20 gallon I currently have him in. The students will learn to care for him, as well as observe the environment and habitat of bearded dragons.

I'm hoping the 5th graders that I teach will learn some empathy for others who are not considered "normal", and can help care for others.

Students at this age need to see that there is more to care about than just themselves.
