Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"Education should consist of a series of enchantments, each raising the individual to a higher level of awareness, understanding, and kinship with all living things." - Author Unknown.
A large number of my students know little of the world around them. I would love to teach them more about it.
My school is located in an low-socioeconomic area of Nevada.
My 38 third grade students are unfortunately labeled "At Risk" and many come from single-parent homes. Most of our students speak two languages. Everyday a huge number of our students come to class unprepared. They lack the most basic of supplies such as pencils, paper, and backpacks.
Despite all of this, these kids are wonderful! They come to class ready to learn and share all that they know. Sometimes I tear up when they tell me about their lives at home. But most of the time, they make me smile and always make me laugh out loud with their stories. They are quick-witted and very eager to absorb as much knowledge as they can.
My Project
Current events don't seem so current when I ask my students about important world events. My students didn't even know about the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico! After this discussion with them, it made me think to myself about how I learned about the world. I would either watch the news or read the newspaper. It occurred to me that my students do none of these things.
I want to be able to teach them more about the world outside of the school and their neighborhood. I believe it is of great importance to be informed in what is happening, what is causing things to happen, and how these events may directly impact their own lives. I want them to be able to comprehend what the news events were about and show in writing that they understand what they had just read. They will then be able to share with others their new found knowledge.
These "At Risk" students need more exposure to non-fiction material.
Your donations would enable my class an opportunity to broaden their horizons as well as their minds. TIME For Kids shares world news in a way that students find interesting and are able to grasp and retain. The materials and literature provided through this project will serve as an invaluable resource tool to learn what is happening in the world and why it is important. Thank you for taking the time to read my about my project
