This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you remember what it felt like the first time that you experienced hand-held technology? Most of my students have never had the opportunity to experience this feeling of having the world at their fingertips.

Most of my students are from an inner-city neighborhood where gangs are prevalent.

The children come from homes where English is the second language. Their families are financially challenged. Over 96 percent of my students receive free or reduced lunches. With all of their challenges, the children are eager to be successful and the parents make sure that the children are at school to learn everyday. Sometimes, the smallest acts of kindness make the biggest differences in their lives and that is what I notice with my students. If they were to receive an awesome gift of a tablet for the school, they would be so thrilled about being able to learn with this tool.

My Project

Having the opportunity to use a tablet will add so much to not only the students' excitement about learning, but also their excitement about life! With such apps as Word Learner, Math Workout, Google Books, and Mee Genius, my students will be able to learn with lessons tailored to their interest levels and ability levels. They will be able to create and share projects and ideas. My students, most of whom have no learning technologies available at their homes, will be able to experience learning in a way that is new to them, even though it is not new to children from more affluent neighborhoods.

With access to a tablet and the right apps, my students, who sometimes do not even have electricity in their homes, will have the opportunity to have the whole world at their fingertips.

They will be able to come to school and learn with lessons tailored to their interests and needs. They can explore worlds that would otherwise not be available to them.. Learning with the tablet will be a joyful experience. I long to see new doors opening to my students who have seen so many doors closed.
