Keeping the Wheel of Learning Turning.
Relegated to a digital educational world, students lost out.
It’s well documented: they did not thrive in this space.
The mandate now is restorative, to put back what was absent.
To alleviate the mediation of the screen, the solution is the real, tactile world.
To that end, focus on the arts serves as a platform to re-engage. Bringing the world back to focus without the secondary platform of the screen.
Other art teachers describe how the enthusiasm and low-stress environment of the art studio provides a harbor of reliable expression without pressure, surrounded by peers and with messy hands. Happy kids.
Support for programs such as ceramics is high, and SRVUSD has shown that in its funding for our studio.
I seek to continue that support here, asking for a Shimpo Whisper VL pottery wheel.
This is a MODELING wheel that allows me to demonstrate technique and modalities to two students hands-on, and to a small group on onlooking students who can rotate in.
It is also a third wheel for students with aptitude and interest.
Students LOVE ceramics. They are hands-on, screens gone, talking and showing and delightedly focused.
All with a wheel.

I went to Clay People, the ceramic store I use for supplies and advice, and they described how wheels and materials are flying off the shelves and into the hands of children in the classroom. Kilns of any size (and we have a MONSTER professional-grade one here) are 6-8 months backorder. You can’t get one.
