Keeping the Love of Reading Alive with Scholastic 'Action' Magazine
Help me give my students engaging Scholastic 'Action' magazines to read, whether they are in the classroom or participating in remote learning from home, so that they can feel informed and inspired while keeping their reading routine strong.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My school is a grades 6-12 Arts and Sciences magnet school located in Los Angeles, California. Of the students who attend the middle school, 98% are eligible for free or reduced-price lunch.
I am a Resource Specialist Teacher (Special Education Teacher), who co-teaches in seventh and eighth-grade readers/writers workshop and math classes.
Most of the classes I co-teach in are LTEL (Long-Term English Learner) classes and include my caseload of students with learning disabilities (including auditory, visual, and attention deficits) and autism. I collaborate with the teachers at my school to make sure that my students (in the special education program) needs are met, as well as the needs of all students at the school; this includes emphasizing multi-modality instruction and learning activities that make lessons fun, engaging, and accessible to all.
My Project
Scholastic 'Action' magazine has exciting and relevant content about hot topics and inspiring people in each issue. In this time of uncertainty, it is so important for students to keep their reading, learning, and hunger for knowledge alive while connecting them to current events in ways appropriate for their age/development. If this magazine was to be funded and delivered while we are still in a time of quarantine, I would arrange to either mail the magazines to students, or have a pick-up that could accompany the food pick-up that currently happens at my school site. If we are back in school, of course it would be amazing for the students to have these magazines at their fingertips right away!
To be able to read 'Action' magazine will help students feel engaged as they continue to build their nonfiction reading skills as they learn about current issues and inspiring people who are making a difference.
I have seen relevant articles engage even the most reluctant reader, and I know that helping a student build or continue their reading routine by introducing them to texts they love and promoting a true "reading-life", is the key to growth and success!
