My Students

Most children with special needs are challenged when it comes to using their gross motor skills. The use of balls, hula hoops, and jump ropes allows us to practice these skills, get some exercise, and have fun. By having enough equipment in our room everyone can participate at the same time.

We are a TK-2nd grade SDC class located on a TK-4th grade public school campus.

We are located in a rural community with a large population of low income families. My students' disabilities range from Autism, Down's Syndrome, ADHD, ID,Specific Learning Disabilities, and Speech and Language disabilities.

My Project

It is important for kids to have physical activity, but children with special needs tend to shy away from physical activity because their motor skills are under-developed. The use of balls, hula hoops, and jump ropes will allow us to practice these skills and to build our confidence and abilities, so that we want to participate in physical activity not only in our classroom, but with the general education population, and possibly even join a sports team in our community.

We have no playground balls or hula hoops in our classroom at this time.

Having these pieces of playground equipment will make the kids excited about going outside and playing. They will have an opportunity to improve their gross motor skills and begin to learn how to play organized sporting games.
