My Students

Technology today can help overcome many language barriers, but less so if you're tethered to a desktop, or even a slow-loading laptop! Student, parent, and teacher interaction needs to catch up to the 21st century.

My ELLs, or English Language Learner students, are energetic, young pre-teens.

While some are newer immigrants, many are also U.S.-born students who come from limited English homes or have learning disabilities that interfere with their academic progress. Their journey to master social and academic English is not a simple one. For many, the road is made more difficult by the social fears they face as adolescents. And then, there are their parents: those who seek to actively keep their children on track for learning, but also those who work so long, they resort to the school to handle it all.

My Project

Tablets are wonderfully helpful in a classroom. They're fast and portable, yet still powerful enough to accomplish multiple tasks. In our classroom, a tablet can allow the teacher to be mobile, recording notes electronically or capturing work in progress for students' portfolios. For students, they can take on greater responsibility in the classroom for their learning, such as reading monitoring apps, and for the upkeep of our learning environment, such as organizing the classroom library using book scanner apps. For parents, tablets can facilitate information exchange whenever and wherever it's needed in a school building, and without worry about translation barriers with apps like Google Translate plus voice translation.

The uses for the latest technological devices in a classroom are countless, particularly in a classroom like mine that juggles communication limitations.

With the right gadgets, many unnecessary obstacles and burdens can be reduced or eliminated. It also helps to reach students at their level, giving them opportunities to show off their digital native savvy.
