My Students
Technology today can help overcome many language barriers, but less so if you're tethered to a desktop, or even a slow-loading laptop! Student, parent, and teacher interaction needs to catch up to the 21st century.
My ELLs, or English Language Learner students, are energetic, young pre-teens.
While some are newer immigrants, many are also U.S.-born students who come from limited English homes or have learning disabilities that interfere with their academic progress. Their journey to master social and academic English is not a simple one. For many, the road is made more difficult by the social fears they face as adolescents. And then, there are their parents: those who seek to actively keep their children on track for learning, but also those who work so long, they resort to the school to handle it all.
My Project
Tablets are wonderfully helpful in a classroom. Already, the tablets we recently received have helped to accomplish several tasks. They proved a fast way to address student questions in a way that's less obtrusive than using a laptop. It made attendance and other record keeping also quick and seamless. It was useful to video record students experimenting with a hands on project in hallways. However, to ensure that these awesome materials stay in good condition, we need cases and screen protectors to save them from the elements known as kid fingers! As my students are of varying ages and abilities, a little bit of protective foresight will help these tablets stick around for the long haul and future student use. And lastly, having accessories like a VGA adapter can help to mirror an iPad screen for display, further opening up options for instruction, and would have proved helpful recently when conducting after school guitar lessons for student using iPad only guitar instruction app.
The uses for the latest technological devices in a classroom are countless, particularly in a classroom like mine that juggles communication limitations.
With the right gadgets, many unnecessary obstacles and burdens can be reduced or eliminated. It also helps to reach students at their level, giving them opportunities to show off their digital native savvy.
