Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are highly motivated, highly diverse, and highly dedicated to music and school. They love exploring sound and songs through our classes. They respect their equipment and love using the instruments and tools to further their learning.
My students work together in harmony to create harmony.
They explore our culture by singing and dancing to folk songs. They learn history through exploring the composers and their famous musical works. They learn about sound and instrumental technique by playing recorders, xylophones, drums, and ukuleles.
My Project
My students have been very excited about the ukuleles that they have received through grants! They love playing the ukuleles and exploring music using these awesome instruments. However, when it comes time to put them away, many of my students hesitate. Not just because the students are reluctant to stop learning, but also because we have no place to tuck our ukuleles in for the afternoon. Our current storage for the ukes are in the original cardboard boxes that they were shipped in. As you can imagine, normal classroom use has started to cause wear on these boxes - the boxes were designed to be temporary, after all. We also have dreams of taking our ukes on the road to perform in the community, and maybe even farther than that! The best way to protect our ukuleles at home and on the road is by carefully placing it in a case. The cases I have picked are gig bags - light enough for students to carry and handle comfortably, but durable and padded enough to keep the ukulele safe. We would really appreciate these cases!
