My Project

When you find something that the kids like and helps with learning, you stick with it. There are two massive projects that I like to incorporate every year that my children love: alphabet handprint books and zoo sight words.

In order to carry these projects off I need the materials: cardstock and sharpies which periodically need to be replaced.

My cardstock is out and the Sharpies I currently have are running dry or the tips are not as sharp as they used to be! Both projects align with the basic skills in Kindergarten reading..letter sounds and sight words.

For the alphabet handprint book, each student makes a handprint for each letter. The students then use the sharpies to add details to turn that handprint into something else (i.e. B is for butterfly, S is for strawberry). The kids are always so proud of their pictures and it's personal so there is some great buy-in! The sight words are divided into sets of 10 words with each set being assigned a zoo animal. The kids "travel through the zoo" and learn the words. The cardstock is used to print sets of words--one set to practice at home and one set to practice at school when they are finished with their work.
