Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The students in my classroom are eager learners. They work together well and enjoy exploring. Three-fourths of my class are students with special needs and the other fourth are students who are English language learners. A majority of my students have never touched a computer outside of school.

I teach 4th grade in an inner-city public school district just north of New York City.

Our students come from a variety of cultural and ethnic backgrounds. A majority of our students come from poverty level homes or broken homes. In many instances, the adults with whom the students reside cannot assist them with their schoolwork because of the language barrier. In addition, a large proportion (approximately 57%) of the students are eligible for the State Free Lunch Program.

My Project

Our class studies current events throughout the year from newspaper articles that are in the newspaper. However, with these magazines the students will be able to see the news in color. Additionally, these magazines will provide the students with information on topic that is on their level. If we want our students to be prepared for the world they need to be aware of what is going on in it first.

Every day my students participate in a period of instruction called Guided reading.

During this time, the Time for Kids magazines will be used to teach and reinforce reading strategies that will help our students become readers.
