Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The school where I teach was expanded to include the building next door. My classroom does not have running water, and visiting the "nearest" drinking fountain in the next building over causes students to miss out on valuable teaching time. They need access to water!

I work with middle school students, many of whom come to me following P.E.

Even if students remember to bring a water bottle to school, they do not have easy access to water to refill it on our side of the campus. They are frequently asking to go get a drink, and not just to get out of class. They need easy access to water so they can stay hydrated. Additionally, as a classroom teacher where students share desks, it is nearly impossible to promote good hygiene without water or cleaning products. With flu season just around the corner, we need a solution for after students blow their nose, before they have a snack, when their hands are dirty, and when their desks are grimy and smeared. Students thrive in a clean environment where germs don't.

My Project

We need a Water Jug with a TeraPump, Kleenex Tissues, Hand Sanitizer, and Clorox Wipes so they can stay hydrated and healthy so they can focus on their learning. These resources will provide my students with a readily accessible source of water, students can stay in class, get the most out of the lessons, and stay hydrated and happy. I plan to set up a table as a water station. I can refill the 5-gallon jugs locally, and the TeraPump is easy to install and easy to use. Students can either use the cups provided, or bring their own water bottles. I know I can meet my students' water needs with this simple addition to our classroom. Also, since we don't have access to water to keep our hands and classroom clean, I know with such supplies as the Kleenex tissues, Purell hand sanitizer, and Clorox wipes the students can meet the same goal. They will be able to have a clean work space and keep their immune systems up. Healthy kids spend more time in class, and make better progress as a result.

We are a low income school, and many students come from low income families.

We look to donations to help meet our students' needs. My students need easy access to drinking water. They also need a clean and healthy classroom. Healthy and hydrated students make better learners.
