This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I have a wonderful group of kindergarten students this year. The students are a diverse group of students from all walks of life. Most of my students will come to school with a different home language other than English making it even more challenging for students as they must grasp concepts in a second language. Every kindergartner gets free breakfast and lunch at school daily.
Most of my students will enter kindergarten with no prior school experience.
Kindergartners start the year excited, nervous, and so proud to show off the skills they already know. They are 5 and 6 year olds who are expected to listen and learn for 7 hours a day. As a teacher educating such young and fresh minds I find it very important to ensure students are able to learn in many different ways.
My Project
I am requesting a listening center to help my students develop their literacy skills. Not a lot of my students are read to at home as it is not an activity done in regularly in the culture of my students. By having books on CD, and a listening center in my classroom, students will be gaining very beneficial time listening to how books are read properly.
When a student hears books read to them they better understand fluency and sentence structure.
Having students listen to books is such a valuable tool to help them gain literacy skills.
A lot of my students also don't speak English at home which means listening to books on tape at school in English helps them develop their language skills.
I have also asked for some drawers to help organize the books on CD as well as some books to get my collection started. This will help students get a wide range of books to listen to, and they will be organized nicely.
