Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students come from inland and are so excited to be at the ocean studying the creatures that live there. Sometimes it is the first time they have seen the ocean. They are eager for hands-on learning! They have clever minds and pick up quickly on new concepts. They are very energetic and ready to learn.

Their week at outdoor science school, learning about the ocean is something they will never forget.

For many, it will be a life changing experience, opening their eyes to the natural world around them and it's beauty.

My Project

This camera will allow us to look at the plankton we collect all together as a class on a big screen and discuss what we see. This will replace 30 year old equipment which is not compatible with our new microscope and current audio visual technology. We will be collecting plankton in the Morro Bay Estuary and looking at both the microscopic plant and animal organisms that are the basis of the ocean food chain and thereby critical to the health of the ocean. Students will get to see these creatures moving and swimming before their eyes as a follow up to their estuary field trip.
