I teach at a model school that incorporates performing arts, visual arts, coding, computer science, financial literacy, and STEM (STEAM) within the curriculum. Our urban school receives federal funding for programs that provide free breakfast and lunch for every student, and Title I services to economically-disadvantaged boys and girls. We are a class that includes military families, gifted/talented students, ESL/ELL students, inclusion/special education students, and the tech-savvy. My students are energetic and very busy within the classroom. Even with parental support, I would love to say that my students have everything that they need to be successful but they don't.
School bells are not ringing inside traditional buildings but from bedrooms, family rooms, and kitchen tables.
Fifteen new second-grade students are not walking into a regular classroom. They will be experiencing a hybrid school year that alternates between virtual and in-person learning. How do you try to teach community and content from a distance when you don't know the students yet? And what they need more than ever are materials and resources in their hands and at homes.
A total virtual school day should not have young children looking at a computer screen all day. I am looking for ways for my second graders who are just beginning to use a computer for productivity to have adventures and discover new things away from our computer screens. I love reading TIME For Kids! I am requesting student subscriptions of TIME For Kids for my entire class. My students will have print copies of the magazine that they will be able to read and complete choice boards each month. These tasks can be done without a computer or online. My students will have the joy of receiving a magazine mailed to them from their teacher. Having the magazines mailed to their homes will give them something to look forward to each month and connect them to me.
Making connections has never more important than it is right now!
I have found that my students love watching videos. All of the videos on BrainPOP Jr lend themselves to asynchronous learning. The videos can be shared through Google Classroom and my students will be able to complete tasks using Kami. All of this is new for myself and my students, but learning to adapt to change is what makes us unique. I know that my students will thrive and shrine brightly as they persevere through this new learning experience.
