Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My music students are an extremely special group of musicians. They are at school every day after school until 5, 6, and even 7 pm for marching band rehearsal. Then they must walk home, do their homework, and get back to school the next day.
Most students would choose not to be a part of the band if these were their challenges, but our students know how special music is to their lives.
Our school is an area where many students come from low-income, single-parent households, where they continue to have responsibilities after the bell rings at school.
Despite the challenges, our students face on a day-to-day basis, they always have smiles on their faces when they come into my classroom. The students are always working together and trying to help each other improve.
Being in a music classroom, we like to have fun, but we never let the fun get in the way of our learning and achievement. Despite their struggles, my students are always striving to succeed in my classroom.
My Project
In the second semester of the school year, our Marching Band program transforms into our Indoor Drumline program. Much like marching band, the students are practicing every day to create a show that involves only percussion instruments. This semester, we will be adding 15 more students and we need more supplies so each student has the equipment they need to play in the group.
We need more drum stands, mallets and instruments to accommodate our growing program.
Right now, we only have 6 stands but 12 drums and many of our mallets are breaking. This project will allow all of our drum students to have their own stand so they don't have to hold the heavy drum on their shoulders. It will also give our mallet students fresh new mallets to help them play better.
