My Students

The students in my 1st grade classroom are eager to learn to read and write. They are motivated by a wide selection of writing activities. These students often come to school with a lower experience with literacy than peers in area districts. Our school is in a high poverty area, and all students get free breakfast and lunch.

My 1st grade students are up for the challenge of reading and writing.

They are thirsty to be independent readers and writers and are working hard to be successful.

My Project

In a 1st grade classroom, the struggling readers often get the majority of the attention and resources. My goal is to keep my high, capable readers interested in reading. I've chosen high quality chapter books to begin a book club within my classroom. For example, I've chosen The One and Only Ivan by Katherine Applegate. This book was a New York Times Bestseller and won the Newberry Medal!

My capable readers need to be pushed to keep reading!

I've met with this group, and they would like to begin a book club. I'm in need of multiple copies of high interest and high quality chapter books.
