This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are motivated, hardworking, talented, and thirsty for knowledge.

They are dreamers who anxiously await an opportunity for college matriculation.

They are Latino and African-American, come from low-income families, poor neighborhoods, and most have responsibilities outside of school that would make any one of us rethink our most difficult hardships. Yet, they still come to school because in a way it is a release from reality and a hopeful investment for their future. From South Central LA to college!

My Project

My goal is to help my students participate and elevate their reading not only in the classroom but outside of the classroom as well. If this project is fully funded, students in my classes would have access to graphic novels that they can use as extracurricular reading. They would be allowed to read in class during G.R.A.B. (Go Read A Book) and borrow these to take home if they choose to. Books have no business on a shelf when there are many eager minds waiting.

I have chosen to go with graphic novels because as an art teacher I strongly believe that creating a mental picture of what you are reading is key to becoming a better reader and so what better way to further develop these mental images than to start with the examples that illustrated books can offer?

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
