Our elementary school is located in a rural town of North Carolina. The town has a population of 4,591. We are a Title I school. Our diverse group of students come to school eager to learn and smiling every day, despite the fact that many live below the poverty line. Every morning as I greet students off the bus, I am reminded of why I come here every day and how excited I am to teach them!
For my students, school is not only a place they come to learn, but also a place of love, support, and exploration.
Here at our school, we have a program called Capturing Kids Hearts. This program is helping our staff build positive and meaningful relationships every day with our students. Each morning, we greet our students at our doors to welcome them to our classrooms and share good things that are happening in their lives.
Our goal is to give children the best education and help them feel loved and welcomed in their community.
My Project
I would like to start building a set of World Drums for my classroom so that my students can begin playing more multicultural music. I teach a Sounds of the World class, but we currently watch videos of different types of instruments instead of being able to actually play them. These drums will give the students a more hands-on approach to world music and make it much more fun for them to learn! We plan to use the "Drum it Up!" book from Beatn' Path Publications to create our World Drumming music.
