Keep The Fire Burning For Reluctant Readers

My students need a variety of young adult books to help replenish our depleted classroom library.

My Students

"You NEED to be able to read..." These are the words that I often whisper into the ears of my frustrated students when they are supposed to be reading independently. Many of my students are apathetic readers who come in and do not share the same passion for reading as I do.

There is a vast amount of educational data out there that shows the ability to read is the single most important factor in setting up a child for success.

With my first few DonorsChoose projects, I was able to hook many of these reluctant readers with the initial set of books I received. After a student read one or two of these books, they wanted to continue to read because they genuinely enjoyed what they read and they felt as if the author was speaking directly to them. Unfortunately, when these reluctant readers finished all of the books in a specific series, genre, or by a specific author, many of them went back to their old habits. I was SO CLOSE to lighting the fire within them that would make them habitual readers, but I ran out of resources.

My Project

Sadly, some of my students do not believe that college is in their future. It’s because their reading levels are so drastically low. If these students were exposed to a variety of series, genres, and authors that they were interested in, many of them would have aspirations to get into college and graduate. It’s not that my students lack the ability (they are oozing with potential). It’s simply a shortage of books that keeps my students’ passion for reading locked away. It is crucial that my students have as many options as possible to sustain their reading and turn this into a life-long habit. With your donations, my students will have a convenient (and free!!!) place to find books that will explode their thinking and help them develop the work ethic they need to become the educated and hard working leaders of tomorrow.

Many of my students are now in love with reading and value it's life changing importance, but there are still far too many that WE have not been able to reach.

Help me help my students change our world. Together, we can ignite their love of reading.
