My Students

I teach in an urban, middle/ high school in Upstate New York. Our school has a 96% free lunch because most of our kids live below the poverty level. My kids come from high-poverty, high-crime neighborhoods. Like most kids, they excel when they have positive interaction with their peers. Cell phones often negatively impact their social interactions.

My Project

We collected cell phones at our school last year. It made a positive impact on the learning because students weren’t distracted by their phones all day. There were some glitches though that could be solved by these Yondr pouches.

We would love the Yondr pouches because the student puts his phone in his pouch and then touches it to a magnet which locks his phone inside.

If a teacher allows phones such as art or dance, the student could have a hub in that room to unlock the pouch, use it for the period, then lock it back up before the core classes. This gives the student full responsibility to keep track of the pouch. He would keep it all year and have to be organized enough to bring it back and forth each day. This storage method keeps all the drama outside the school walls unless a teacher sees fit to allow use. Students interact with each other rather than stare at a screen all lunch period and sneak glimpses all day. Theses pouches would elevate storage requirements and several man hours each day.
