My students need ten copies each of the Virginia Readers' Choice books, such as Ship Breaker, Annexed and Bonechiller, to read for the state-wide contest. The audio books will help lower level readers participate.

My Students

For the last two years our students have participated in the Virginia Readers' Choice (VRC) contest, and it is hard for us to get enough copies of the ten titles that are on the book list. Each year we have teenagers waiting on books! We also have lower level readers who want to participate!

Our high school has a population of about 1,400 students.

The student population is very diverse and includes students participating in a new Science and Medicine Academy. Our school is considered urban and also has a large number of students on free or reduced lunch. Many of our students love reading and enjoy participating in the state's reading promotion. This year over ten percent of our students are reading and have taken over two hundred quizzes on this year's VRC books. Over the last several years, our circulation has increased almost fifty percent, and we are regularly serving over one hundred thirty students each day before school and during lunches. Our students love to check out and read new books!

My Project

My students need ten copies each of the Virginia Readers' Choice books such as Ship Breaker, Annexed and Bonechiller to read for the state-wide contest. The audio books will help lower level readers participate. The books and audio CDs we are requesting will allow us to provide enough materials to all students who want to participate in the Virginia Readers' Choice Award contest. This program is sponsored by the Virginia State Reading Association. Students must read at least four of the ten books to vote on their favorite. At our school we also run an additional contest to encourage students to read all ten of the books to earn entries into an end-of-the-year prize drawing. The book list is very diverse and includes fiction and nonfiction titles. Students who participate are exposed to a wide variety of literature and many books they might not have self-selected. The audio books will be very useful to our special education students as well as our hearing impaired students. These materials will give every teenager in our building access to the fabulous books in the Virginia Readers' Choice program.

We all recognize that high school students have access to many other sources of entertainment other than reading.

However, we know that if students have access to quality reading materials and have teachers and librarians who talk about these great books, students will read. We also know that reading is the best way to expand vocabulary and knowledge about the world. Our goal is to establish a love of reading in all of our students before they leave high school.
