My Students

“Winning has nothing to do with racing. Most days don't have races anyway. Winning is about struggle and effort and optimism, and never, ever, ever giving up.” ― Amby Burfoot, Runner's Guide to the Meaning of Life

Each day my ESL students make the brave effort of sharing and expressing themselves in English, and these growing learners are slowly finding ways to overcome the roadblocks of acquiring a new language.

My students are enthusiastic, multi-faceted young teens who come from a range of cultural backgrounds and immigrant experiences, primarily Spanish, Chinese, and Arabic-speaking. Many have moved beyond the initial stage of being lost and lonely in a large urban middle school. Now they must persevere to express themselves with precision and successfully decode grade-level readings and content alongside their peers, despite the comparatively limited resources they have to extend their English language and academic learning beyond school walls.

My Project

My students are on a roll expanding their English vocabulary knowledge and building reading fluency, but many are still painfully shy about speaking English. I want to remove some of the pressures they face speaking in front of others in classroom settings, and allow them opportunities to converse through fun technology tools that encourage students to narrate stories or talk about themselves using avatars and short voice recording clips. Having additional audio materials in my classroom will first, allow more students at a time to take part in this kind of practice, and second, help listening and speaking class activities become more varied and exciting.

The possibilities of what my students can learn from one another and they ways they can enrich our school community are limitless, as long as they have a safe space to grow their confidence in English.

They can then make better sense of their classes and start to feel more at home in their new school. This is what your donation can help accomplish.
