My students need several books of poetry and Nonfiction texts in order to enrich our writing program. The students will learn a serious craft in a potentially challenging and exciting environment.

"No one READS anymore," claims the political pundit on the radio, but I must disagree. In my school's Literary Arts courses, we focus on reading and writing as a craft and a process. Reading and writing both encourage critical thinking and advanced composition skills--both of which are vital to success in college or in the business world. Our students hail from 14 different school systems, some of them poor and rural, and some of them wealthy and urban. We celebrate our unity in diversity and focus on self-expression as a tool for change in the world. Reading and writing about different cultures and experiences opens minds and allows change to develop.
The recession hit us all. Our school's budget was cut greatly. The cuts naturally hurt the programs that are not considered core courses. In order to advance our program and enhance the level of student learning, we need more materials with which to make this happen. Delving into a process by which one produces a publicly represented work inspires the students to trust themselves in many realms. Self confidence, knowing how to map out a plan, and making that plan come to fruition are keys to becoming a successful college student or a successful entrepreneur.
We need a collection of books of writing, as well as books on the craft and process of writing. When students study HOW someone wrote the book they are reading, they feel empowered and are able to produce their own works with more confidence. I would like books by authors who also wrote books ABOUT writing.
You could be the one to help my students expand their horizons and prepare for the critical and vital activities that will be required of them as they move into college or the business world. Reading thrives!
