I have the pleasure of teaching 29 curious and creative students in a combined 5th and 6th grade classroom. This is my third year at this very unique, semi-rural school site and every year, I am impressed not only by my students' academic achievements but also by their affinity for anything artistic or otherwise STEAM-related.
My students have skills and interests that are as diverse as their backgrounds and I am dedicated to creating an environment in which they all can thrive and succeed!
I am responsible for teaching all subject areas to my diverse group of learners. These subject areas range from core academics such as language arts and math to content areas such as art, science and social studies.
In order to teach all of these subject areas to multiple grade levels in an engaging and successful manner, I often develop hands-on projects which appeal to different modalities. My students are constantly surprising me with their innovation and resourcefulness. They are collaborative, energetic and eager to take on new opportunities as the future leaders of the planet!
My Project
In the past three years, my students have continually impressed me with their innovation and creativity. They possess the ingenuity to be the next generation of problem solvers through their skills in engineering and technology. In order to encourage them in this endeavor, I have been developing a number of hands-on STEAM activities.
When working on STEAM projects, we are often cutting through tough materials, which has proven difficult with the "kid scissors" that have been provided to me by my school site.
They have been putting in the extra effort necessary, but I have determined that it is time to make this part of their projects easier so that they can reserve their problem-solving skills for more advanced tasks in their projects. Please help to encourage our next generation of problem solvers and planet savers! Thank you!
