I teach in a school district located in WI. The school district has many cultures and socioeconomic backgrounds. Our school district prides itself on offering the best education to all students.
Making positive choices, being comfortable and having current up to date, interesting materials allow the students to stay vested in their work and behavior.
Students show up each day ready to learn and grow focusing on being their best selves by embracing a growth mindset and becoming resilient learners. Students work with others, sharing materials and spaces and move around the room. These students are working hard to become independent learners, responsible citizens, and positive decision-makers. They crave new experiences and engaging real-life learning opportunities where they will strive and succeed.
My class is made up of students with a variety of needs. Students gain a sense of ownership within our classroom and are enabled to become invested in their own education.
My Project
There's no denying the crisis we see in the world when it comes to mental health. Students feel stressed, anxious and often need breaks to deal with these issues. In our classroom, I'd like to help students address emotional regulation while teaching students strategies using the tools I get to independently regulate themselves while supporting their mental health and promoting academic achievement.
The sensory materials requested will support student self-regulation and allow students to take emotional breaks when needed throughout their busy and rigorous academic schedule.
Weighted lap pads can provide great relaxation for anxious students. In addition, sending messages to parents with little distraction and background noise is not only fun but helps them to calm down and feel connected to home. The calming, soft rug and floor lamp provide a place for students to go with sensory items. Students will benefit from sensory tools and manipulative items in a space that allows students to take a break and gather themselves when they feel they need it. The storage tools will allow students have an identifiable space to locate these invaluable resources and keep our room organized as well.
