Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach English Language Arts and Social Studies to fifth graders in an urban public school in Illinois. Many of them are English Language Learners, and most of them are bilingual.

My students are delightful, thoughtful young people who come to school excited to learn each day.

Each one brings something special to our classroom community. The best part of my job is watching my students grow more independent and capable as they take on new challenges and take ownership of their learning.

My Project

This year has been a challenge for everyone, and my students are no exception. I strive to make my writing class a place to process some of the challenging emotions and experiences students are bringing back into the classroom with them. This includes the opportunity to write about those experiences, and it also means creating a calm space in the classroom where students can process what they're feeling and calm down.

We need writing materials, as well as materials to ground students and release excess energy in a safe and healthy way.

In supporting this project, you'll help me purchase pencils, a pencil sharpener, fidgets to help kids ground their emotions when they're feeling anxious, and bands that can be attached to chairs to release excess energy for those student who can benefit from this.
